How to get a free custom shirt mockup before you pay

Short answer: Submit your inquiry with your logo or design idea, and Togethread will send a digital mockup—showing your design on the actual garment in the actual colors—within 24 hours, at no charge and with no commitment to buy.

A mockup is the single most important step in any group apparel order. It’s the difference between “this looked great in my head” and “I’d actually wear this.” Here’s exactly what to expect and how to use it well.

What a mockup includes

A shirt mockup is a digital rendering that shows:

It’s not a photo of a finished shirt—it’s a design visualization. The goal is to confirm placement, colors, and scale before anything is printed.

When you receive your mockup

With Togethread, the timeline works like this:

  1. Submit your inquiry via the quote form—include your design file or describe your idea, choose your garment and color, and specify your size breakdown.
  2. Receive your mockup within 24 hours—a dedicated designer creates it and sends it by email.
  3. Request revisions—colors off? Placement too high? Logo too small? Reply with feedback. Revisions are included.
  4. Approve in writing—once you’re happy, you give written approval. Production starts only after this step.
  5. Pay the deposit—50% of the order total is due at approval. The remaining 50% is due after you see finished product photos.

You never pay the full amount upfront, and production never begins before you’ve seen and approved the design.

How to give good mockup feedback

Vague feedback leads to more rounds and more time. Here’s what works:

VagueSpecific
”The colors look off""The red should match our school color—Pantone 186 C"
"Make the logo bigger""Increase the logo to about 10 inches wide across the chest"
"Something’s not right""The logo should be centered on the left chest, not the full front"
"Can we change the shirt color?""Switch the shirt from black to navy blue”

If you have a brand color guide, attach it to your first email. If you don’t, send a reference image of something that’s close to what you want.

What file formats produce the best mockup

The cleaner your input file, the sharper the mockup (and the final print). In order of preference:

  1. Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG)—infinitely scalable, no quality loss
  2. High-resolution PNG with transparent background—works well for most logos
  3. High-resolution JPG—acceptable if the resolution is 300 DPI or higher at print size
  4. Low-res PNG or JPG from a website—will look blurry; the designer will flag this and ask for a better file

If you only have a low-res version of your logo, see our guide on what file you need to print a logo on a shirt.

How Togethread does it

There’s no self-serve mockup tool. A real designer looks at your brief and creates the mockup manually—which means they catch things an automated tool won’t, like a logo with colors that won’t translate well to fabric, or a design that’s too detailed for embroidery.

You get up to three design concepts in the first round. Most orders are approved within two rounds of revisions. There’s no fee for the mockup or revisions—it’s part of the service.

FAQ

What if I don’t have a logo or design yet? Describe what you want—your team name, colors, and the general feel (bold and sporty, clean and professional, etc.)—and the designer will create something from scratch. This is included at no extra charge.

Do I have to commit to buying once I request a mockup? No. The mockup is free with no obligation. You only commit when you approve the design and pay the deposit.

What happens if the finished shirts don’t match the approved mockup? You’ll receive photos of the finished garments before paying the balance. If there’s a quality issue that differs from what you approved, it gets resolved before the order ships—not after.
