Cotton vs polyester vs blend: which fabric for your custom shirts?

Short answer: Choose 100% cotton for the softest feel and richest everyday prints; polyester for sweat-wicking sports and outdoor wear; and a cotton/poly blend when you want a middle ground that’s soft, durable, and a bit cheaper. For most group shirts people wear day to day, a heavyweight combed-cotton tee is the safest pick.

• Cotton — Class shirts, family reunions, company offsites, anything worn casually. A 200gsm+ heavyweight combed cotton has a retail feel and holds shape wash after wash. (What is a heavyweight tee?)

• Blend (e.g., 50/50 or tri-blend) — Large budget-friendly runs and fundraisers, or when you want a soft, lived-in feel that resists wrinkles.

Common mistakes

• Buying the thinnest shirt to save a dollar. A flimsy tee gets worn once and buried. A heavyweight cotton costs slightly more and actually gets worn — better value per wear.
• Using cotton for a sweaty event. It absorbs and stays damp; performance polyester is far more comfortable for races and games.
• Assuming all blends feel the same. A tri-blend feels premium and drapey; a basic 50/50 is more utilitarian. Ask for the exact blend.
